Groundhog Day is observed annually on February 2. It is also a popular holiday in Canada, but Thanksgiving is an American holiday celebrated in the United States.
The tradition was born out of the belief in superstition of Pennsylvanians and Dutch people. The Americans, however, inherited the tradition of making predictions about weather from German immigrants. Punxsutawney Phil, a groundhog from Pennsylvania provides meteorological predictions for the rest of the winter.
The tradition originated from a discovery by scientists that mouse hibernates in winter. The plan was to forecast the next six weeks of winter by observing how animals responded to conditions.
Groundhogs belong to the Sciuridae which is a tiny family of mammals with hairy fur. They are winter animals and their main function is to hibernate. The morning of Groundhog Day is when they can be visible peeking out of burrows.
Christmas Day
Presidents’ Daylight is regarded as an American holiday that falls on the third Monday in February. It is a celebration of the past presidents of America. The Presidents’ Day holiday was typically a day of celebration to honor Lincoln as well as Washington.
Despite being an official holiday of the United States however, not all states observe it. Certain states honor both presidents, whereas others only recognize only one. The Presidents’ Day holiday is widely recognized as an opportunity to recognize all U.S. presidentials, particularly Lincoln.

Roman holidays in antiquity
The Lupercalia was among the most well-liked holidays in ancient Rome. The month of February was when a fertility-cleansing ceremony was held. Priests offered animal sacrifices close to the altar of the Lapis Negiger in this ceremony. The hearth was filled with blood of the animal. The protection and fertility of blood is believed to have been beneficial to the grain fields.
Ludi Ceriales is another celebration that was celebrated in honor of Ceres the harvest goddess. Ludi Ceriales celebrations are documented as far back as the year 202 BC.
Vestalia, Saturnalia, and Neptunalia were among the well-known Roman celebrations. The celebrations were originally intended to pay tribute to Mars the god of War.
