Calendar 2024 March – There are many wonderful holidays that are scheduled for February and they are all observed during the entire month. Some of the most popular holidays are President’s Day. Groundhog Day, Valentine’s Day and meteor Showers. There are many Roman celebrations also take place on various days.
February 14th
Valentine’s Day is a day that is devoted to love and romance which is celebrated every year on February 14. The origins of the holiday can be traced to the Middle Ages, a time where sacraments and courtly love were commonplace.
It was believed to be a day of celebration which honored romance between romantic partners and close friends from the 14th century. Valentine’s Day was a day where it was commonplace for lovers and friends to send gifts, flowers, or cards.
The beginning of the nineteenth century saw the introduction commercial cards. The popularity of postcards that were printed in bulk was also increasing. These themed displays were displayed in shops.
Valentine’s Day traditions include buying your loved one a sweet or chocolate present , along with a flower or card. You may also choose to gift them jewelry.
February 2nd.
Groundhog Day falls on February 2. Even though it’s a big deal in Canada but Thanksgiving is an American holiday.
This celebration was born of superstition from Pennsylvanians and Dutch people. The custom of making predictions about weather conditions was introduced to the United States with German immigration. PunxsutawneyPhil, a Pennsylvania groundhog, makes meteorological predictions throughout the winter.
After scientists found out that mice hibernated in winter, they established the foundation for this custom. It was designed to predict the next six weeks by studying the way animals react to weather conditions.
Groundhogs belong to the Sciuridae group of small hairy mammals. They hibernate throughout winter. The morning of Groundhog Day, they are often visible peeking out of burrows.
Christmas Day
Presidents Daylight, which falls on the third Monday in Februar, is considered a national holiday. It is a celebration of the previous presidents of America. Presidents’ Day has historically been a day to honor both Washington and Lincoln.
Although it is an official holiday of the United States however, not all states observe it. Certain states celebrate the birthdays of both presidents on the same day, but some states only recognize only one president. The Presidents Day holiday is a day to honor all U.S. presidents, including Lincoln.
The origins of the Presidents’ Day holiday is complex. The Washington’s Birthday was the initial name for the holiday that is now referred to as Presidents’ Day.
An unofficial holiday that is well-known was the birthday of Washington, which is often known as Washington’s Day. In the 1870s, however it was declared an official holiday recognized by the federal government. Congress adopted the Uniform Monday holiday Act.
Meteor storms
Every year it is observed that the Earth revolves in the solar system. This causes a flood of tiny meteors which are released into space. They appear virtually everywhere in the sky. Some showers are more spectacular than others. The best time to see them is in the evening.
Perseids is among the most beautiful and impressive meteor showers of the year 2018. This is due to the fact that the comet 109P/Swift Tuttle was responsible. Although it won’t be visible from the Northern Hemisphere due to the high rates of fireballs in the Southern Hemisphere, it is worthwhile to observe from that area.
There are four major meteor Showers every year. The Quadrantid, number 1, is well-known for its explosive but brief peak. Another one of the most famous for its bizarre spikes is the Lyrid. In addition the Geminid is renowned for its attractive appearance.
Roman holidays from antiquity
The Lupercalia was a Roman holiday that was loved by many. A cleansing and fertility ceremony took place during February in the middle. The priests offered animal sacrifices on an altar close to the Lapis Niiger. The hearth was then emptied of the blood of the animal. The grain fields were thought to benefit from its protection and fertility.
Ludi Ceriales is another celebration that was held in honor Ceres the goddess of harvest. Since 202 BC, Ludi Ceriales celebrations are documented.
Other popular Roman festivities are Neptunalia, Saturnalia and Vestalia. These celebrations were originally planned to celebrate Mars, the god war.
Roman working weeks lasted for eight days. Every day consisted of two parts: the morning, and the afternoon. A nundin was a collection that comprised of eight days. The remaining 29 days were the remainder of the calendar year.
