Presidents’ Day, Valentine’s Day, Groundhog Day and meteor showers are a few of these. There are also several ancient Roman celebrations throughout the year.
February 14th
Valentine’s Day celebrates love and passion on the 14th of February every year. It can be traced back as far as the Middle Ages, when love was more prevalent than sacramental and courtly.
It was considered a celebration that celebrated the love between romantic partners as well as close friends during the 14th century. Valentine’s Day was the day to send one another flowers, gifts and even cards.
In the beginning of the 19th century commercial cards became easily available. Popularity grew with the popularity of printing postcards in bulk. They were put up in stores as themed displays.
Valentine’s Day traditions include buying your loved one a sweet or chocolate present , along with a bouquet of flowers or a card. It is possible to also present jewelry.
February 2 February 2, 2012
Groundhog Day falls on February 2. While it is also a popular holiday in Canada the Thanksgiving holiday is an American holiday celebrated in America.
The tradition was conceived of as a superstition among Pennsylvanians Dutch immigrants. However, the practice of forecasting weather came to the United States with German immigration. Punxsutawney Phil Groundhog, a groundhog from Pennsylvania, makes meteorological predictions for the rest of the winter.
It all started when scientists found an animal that was hibernating during the winter. The idea was to forecast the weather conditions for the six remaining weeks by studying how animals react to it.
Groundhogs are part of the Sciuridae group of small hairy mammals. In winter, their main job is to go into hibernation. Groundhog Day is a common day when they can be observed peering out of their burrows.
Christmas Day
Presidents’ Daylight is regarded as an American holiday that falls on the third Monday of February. It’s an honor to all past American presidents. The Presidents’ Day was typically a day of celebration to honor Lincoln as well as Washington.
Even though it is a federal holiday several states do not observe it. While some states recognize both presidents birthdays on the same day as others, other states only recognize only one. Although Presidents’ day is now standard, it allows us to remember the names of all U.S. presidents and especially Lincoln.
The background of Presidents’ Day is a bit tangled. Washington’s Birthday used to be the first name given to the day of celebration. It is now also known as Presidents Day.
A well-known unofficial holiday was the birthday of President Washington, also known as Washington’s Day. In the latter half of 1870s it became a national holiday. Congress adopted the Uniform Monday Day Holiday Act.
Storms of Meteors
Every year, the Earth’s orbit revolves around the sun. A stream of tiny meteors is released into space. They are visible in the sky and can be seen all over the sky. Certain showers are more spectacular then others. It is at night that is the most ideal time of day to observe.
Perseids is among the most beautiful and impressive meteor showers in 2018. It is likely that the Comet 109P/Swift Tuttle is the cause. While it is not visible from the Northern Hemisphere due to the high rates of fireballs within the Southern Hemisphere, it is worthwhile to observe from that area.
There are four major meteor Showers every year. The Quadrantid Number one is famous for its short but potent maximum. Another well-known for its odd surges is the Lyrid. The Geminid is also famous for its attractive appearance.
Roman holidays that date back to antiquity
The Lupercalia festival was extremely loved in ancient Rome. A fertility and cleansing ceremony was held in February. Priests offered sacrifices to animals at an altar next to the Lapis Niger during the ritual. The animal’s blood was dumped in the hearth. The protection and fertility of blood is believed to be beneficial to the grain field.
Ludi Ceriales was another celebration to celebrate Ceres (the goddess of harvest). Since the year 202 BC, Ludi Ceriales celebrations are documented.
Neptunalia, Saturnalia, Vestalia were just a few of the well-known Roman celebrations. The celebrations were originally intended to pay tribute to Mars the god of War.
Roman workweeks had eight days. There were two parts of every day: the morning and the afternoon. Nundins were collections of eight days, and the other 29 days made up the rest of the year.
