Punxsutawney Phil is a groundhog native to Pennsylvania, makes meteorological predictions for the remainder of winter.

It all started when scientists found mice that were hibernating throughout the winter. The initial idea was to forecast six weeks of the seasons by watching how animals reacted to the weather.

Groundhogs are part of the Sciuridae which is a small group of mammals with hairy fur. They are winter animals and their primary purpose is to go into hibernation. Groundhog Day’s morning and evening, they’re often visible peeking out of burrows.

Meteor showers

Every year each year, the Earth passes through its circle around the sun which causes tiny meteors to be released into space. They can be seen all over the sky. Some showers can be more striking than others. The best time for viewing them is in the evening.

Perseids are among the most powerful and beautiful meteor shower of the year. This is due to Comet 109P/Swift Tuttle. It is seen from the Northern Hemisphere, but as the Southern Hemisphere has some of the highest rates of fireballs, it is also worthwhile to look up from there.

There are four major meteor showers every year. The first is Quadrantid. Its short , but powerful maximum is what is most famous. The other is the Lyrid. It is famous for its irregular surges. A Geminid is well-known for being friendly.

Roman holiday celebrations in antiquity

The Lupercalia was a major celebration in the ancient city of Rome. A fertility and cleansing ceremony was held during February in the middle. Priests offered animal sacrifices on an altar close to the Lapis Niger during the rite. The hearth was cleansed of the blood of the animal. The belief was that it would be beneficial for the fertility and protection of the fields of grain.

Ludi Ceriales was another celebration to honor Ceres (the goddess of the harvest). Ludi Ceriales celebrations were first documented in 202 BC.

Neptunalia, Saturnalia, Vestalia were just a few of the most well-known Roman celebrations. The celebrations were originally celebrated to honor Mars the god of war.

Roman working weeks were eight days long. Every day was divided into two parts: the morning or afternoon. Nundin was an 8-day collection, the rest of the year made up of 29 days.
