February 14th

Valentine’s Day is a day dedicated to love and passion which is celebrated every year on February 14. The origins of the holiday can be traced back to the Middle Ages, a time where sacraments and courtly love were widespread.

Scientists have discovered that mice hibernated in winter. The idea was to forecast the weather patterns for the remaining six weeks by observing how animals respond to it.

Groundhogs are part of the Sciuridae which is a tiny family of mammals that have hair. They hibernate throughout winter. On the morning of Groundhog Day, they are frequently spotted peering out from their burrows.

Presidents’ Daylight is regarded as an American holiday that falls on the third Monday of February. It pays tribute to past American presidents. The Presidents’ Day was traditionally a day to honor Lincoln and Washington.

Although it’s an official holiday, not every state observes this holiday. Certain states observe both birthdays of presidents on the day, while some states might only celebrate only one. Presidents’ Day, however, is now widely recognized as a chance to recognize the achievements of all U.S. presidents, especially Lincoln.

There is a long and complicated story of Presidents Day. Washington’s Birthday was the first name given to the celebration. Today, it’s known as Presidents Day.

An unofficial holiday that is well-known was the birthday of Washington, which is often called Washington’s Day. It was made a federal holiday in late 1870s. In reaction, Congress passed Uniform Monday Holiday Law.

Roman holiday celebrations in antiquity

The Lupercalia was a major holiday in ancient Rome. A ritual of cleansing and fertility were held in the middle February. During this rite the priests offered sacrifices of animals on an altar beside the Lapis Naiger. The hearth was saturated with the blood of the animal. It was believed that it would be beneficial to the grains by ensuring their fertility and also protecting the plants from harm.

Ludi Ceriales was another celebration in honor of Ceres the goddess of harvest. Since 202 BC, Ludi Ceriales celebrations were recorded.

Neptunalia, Saturnalia, Vestalia were just a few examples of the most well-known Roman celebrations. The celebrations were originally intended to honor Mars the god of war.

Roman workweeks lasted eight days. There were two portions of each day: the morning and afternoon. Nundin was an eight-day collection, with the rest of the year comprised of 29 days.
