February 14th
Valentine’s Day (February 14th) is a day that celebrates love and affection. It is celebrated every year. The Middle Ages were a time when love was commonplace , and sacraments were more common.
It was considered a celebration which honored romance between romantic partners and close friends from the 14th century. Valentine’s Day was the day to send one another flowers, gifts and cards.
In the early 19th century commercial cards became easily available. Postcards that were printed in bulk received a lot of attention. These cards were used to create themed displays in stores.
Valentine’s Day is traditionally marked by giving your loved one the gift of candy or chocolate, and flowers or a card. It is also possible to give them jewelry.
February 2nd.
Groundhog Day is celebrated annually on February 2. It’s also a popular holiday in Canada however it’s American Thanksgiving.
The tradition was born out of superstition among Pennsylvanians Dutch immigrants. The Americans, however, inherited the tradition of predicting weather forecasts from German immigrants. PunxsutawneyPhil is a Pennsylvania groundhog that provides meteorological predictions all through winter.
After scientists found out that mice hibernate in winter, they set the stage for this habit. The goal was to predict the next six weeks of winter by observing how animals reacted to the conditions.
The Sciuridae family of small hairy mammals also includes groundhogs. It hibernates during the winter. Groundhog Day mornings are a perfect time to see them peering from their burrows.
Christmas Day
Presidents Daylight (third Monday of February) is a federal holiday. It is a day to honor former American presidents. It is a day which celebrates the two presidents, Lincoln, Washington, and is Presidents Since the day it was first introduced.
Although it’s a federal holiday however, many states do not observe it. Although some states honor both presidents birthdays on the exact same day while other states only honor only one. While Presidents’ Day is now standard, it allows us to honor all U.S. presidents and especially Lincoln.
It has a long story. Washington’s Birthday was the original name of the celebration. The day is now known as Presidents Day.
Washington’s birthday, more commonly called Washington’s Day is a well-known non-official holiday. However, in the 1870s it became an official holiday recognized by the federal government. Congress approved the Uniform Monday holiday Act.
Meteor storms
Every year, Earth rotates around its sun. Small meteors are released into the atmosphere. They may appear from all directions. Certain showers are more spectacular than others. Nighttime is the best moment to see them.
One of the biggest and most magnificent meteor showers in the world is the Perseids. This is because the comet 109P/Swift Tuttle was responsible. Although it won’t be seen from the Northern Hemisphere due to the high rates of fireballs in the Southern Hemisphere, it is worth observing from there.
Every year there are four important meteor showers. One of the most famous meteor showers is called the Quadrantid. It is known for its short but very powerful peak. Another one is the Lyrid that is renowned for its unusual surges. The Geminid is known for its casual appearance.
Roman holidays that date back to antiquity
The Lupercalia festival was extremely well-known in the ancient city of Rome. The month of February was when a fertility cleansing ceremony was conducted. In the course of the ceremony, priests offered animal sacrifices to an altar near the Lapis Niiger. The animal’s blood was dumped in the hearth. It was believed that it would be beneficial to the grain crops by ensuring fertility and also protecting the plants from harm.
Ludi Ceriales is another celebration that was celebrated in honor of Ceres the harvest goddess. Ludi Ceriales celebrations can be traced back to the year 202 BC.
Other popular Roman festivities are Neptunalia, Saturnalia and Vestalia. These celebrations were originally held in honor of Mars, the godof war.
Roman workweeks ran for eight days. There were two parts to every day: morning and afternoon. Nundin was a collection consisting of 8 days. The remaining 29 days comprised the remainder of the calendar year.
