Easter March 2023 Calendar – There are many exciting holidays in February. Some of them are observed throughout the year. Presidents Day, Valentine’s Day, Groundhog Day and meteor showers are just a few. Additionally, there are numerous old Roman celebrations which take place on different days.
February 14th
Valentine’s Day, a day which celebrates love and passion, is observed each year on the 14th of February. The Middle Ages are the time that Valentine’s Day was first observed. It was a period when courtly love and the sacraments still were commonplace.
It was a celebration of romantic love in the 14th century. It was common to send Valentine’s Day flowers, cards and gifts to each other.
In the first decade of the nineteenth century commercial cards were widely available. The demand for postcards printed in bulk also grew. These postcards were displayed in shops as themed displays.
Valentine’s Day is traditionally marked by giving your loved one an item of candy or chocolate, as well as an arrangement or card. It is also possible to gift them with jewelry.
February 2nd.
Groundhog Day is observed annually on February 2. Even though it is popular in Canada, Thanksgiving is a American holiday.
The festival originated from a belief system among Pennsylvanians Dutch immigrants. German immigrants brought the tradition of making weather predictions to the United States. Punxsutawney Philip Punxsutawney Philip, a Pennsylvania groundhog, offers meteorological forecasts throughout the rest of winter.
Scientists have discovered that mice hibernated in winter. The goal was to predict the following six weeks of season by observing the way that animals reacted.
Groundhogs are part the Sciuridae Family of small hairy mammals. It is hibernates in the winter. On Groundhog Day is when they can be observed peeking out of burrows.
Christmas Day
Presidents Daylight, which falls on the third Monday in February, is regarded as a national holiday. It pays tribute past American presidents. It is a day that is dedicated to the two presidents, Lincoln, Washington, and has been Presidents’ Day since its inception.
While it’s a federal holiday but not every state observes the holiday in all states. Certain states honor both presidents simultaneously, while some only honor one president. But, Presidents’ Day is now widely recognized as a means of honoring the achievements of all U.S. Presidents, especially Lincoln.
The origins of Presidents’ Day is a bit tangled. Washington’s Birthday was the initial name of the day’s celebration. Today the Presidents’ Day holiday is the official name.
Washington’s birthday, often referred to by the title Washington’s Day was a well-known nonofficial holiday. In the 1870s, it was made a federal holiday. Congress adopted the Uniform Monday Day Holiday Act.
Meteors and storms
Every year, Earth rotates around its sun. Small meteors are released into the atmosphere. They appear in any part of the sky. Some showers are more impressive than others. It is at night that is the most ideal time to watch.
One of the biggest and most spectacular meteor showers that occurs throughout the year is the Perseids. It is probable that the Comet 109P/Swift Tuttle is the cause. It will be visible only in the Northern Hemisphere. However, since the Southern Hemisphere has the highest fireball rates, it’s worth taking a look from that.
Four major meteor showers take place every year. One of them is Quadrantid. Its short , but powerful maximum is what is most famous. Another is the Lyrid which is famous for its unique surges. The Geminid is also renowned for its attractive appearance.
Roman holiday celebrations in antiquity
The Lupercalia holiday was very popular in ancient Rome. In February, in the middle the fertility and cleansing ceremony was conducted. Priests offered animal sacrifices at an altar near the Lapis Niger in the ceremony. The hearth was then emptied of blood from the animal. The belief was that this would benefit the grain crops by ensuring fertility and protecting them.
Ludi Ceriales, another celebration was dedicated to Ceres. Ludi Ceriales celebrations can be traced back to 202 BC.
Neptunalia was among the more well-known Roman celebrations. These celebrations were initially held in honor of Mars the god of war.
Roman working weeks were eight days long. There were two phases to every day: the morning and the afternoon. The nundin was eight days long, while the 29 days remaining were the remainder.
