The Presidents’ Day holiday is now widely recognized as a means of honoring all U.S. Presidents, especially Lincoln.

There is a long and complicated story behind Presidents Day. Washington’s Birthday was the first name given to the day of celebration. It is now called Presidents Day.

Washington’s birthday, also called Washington’s Day is a well-known unofficial holiday. But it became a recognized as a federal holiday in the 1870s. The Uniform Monday Holiday Act was passed by Congress.

Storms of meteors

Roman holidays from antiquity

The Lupercalia is among the most celebrated holidays in the ancient city of Rome. The month of February was when a fertility cleansing ceremony was held. Priests offered animal sacrifices on an altar near the Lapis Niger in the ceremony. The hearth was cleaned of the blood of the animal. It was believed to be beneficial for the fertility and protection of the fields of grain.

Ludi Ceriales was another celebration in honor of Ceres the goddess of harvest. Ludi Ceriales celebrations are documented back to the year 202 BC.

Vestalia, Saturnalia, and Neptunalia were a few other popular Roman celebrations. These were originally celebrated in honor of Mars who was the god of war.

Roman working weeks lasted for eight days. There were two phases of every day: the morning and the afternoon. A nundin consisted of 8 days. The remainder of the year was made up by the remaining 29 days.
