There are many holidays that are celebrated in February, which include Valentine’s Day (President), Groundhog Day (Groundhog Day), and meteor showers (Mesotor Showers). In addition, there are a myriad of ancient Roman celebrations that take place on different days.
February 14th
Valentine’s Day, a day that is a celebration of love and passion, is observed each year on the 14th of February. The Middle Ages are the time that Valentine’s Day was first celebrated. This is a time when courtly love as well as ceremonies were still popular.
It was believed to be a day of celebration that honored the love between romantic partners as well as close friends from the 14th century. Valentine’s Day was a day when it was customary for lovers and friends to give gifts, flowers, or cards.
In the beginning of the 19th century commercial cards were readily available. Postcards that were printed in bulk gained popularity. These postcards were displayed in stores as displays with themes.
Purchasing your special someone with a candy or chocolate present, along with a card or flower is a classic Valentine’s Day tradition. You might also decide to gift them with jewellery.
February 2nd.
Groundhog Day occurs annually on February 2. Even though it’s a big deal in Canada but Thanksgiving is an American holiday.
The idea for this celebration came from a belief system that was popular among Pennsylvanians who spoke Dutch. The Americans, however, inherited the custom of predicting weather forecasts from German immigrants. Punxsutawney Phil is a Pennsylvania groundhog who makes forecasts for the rest of winter.
After scientists found out that mice hibernate in winter, they established the basis for this practice. The goal was to predict the next six weeks of the season based on observations of how animals responded.
The Sciuridae family of tiny hairy mammals also includes groundhogs. During the winter, its primary goal is to hibernate. Groundhog Day is a common day when they can be observed peering out of their burrows.
Christmas Day
The third Monday of February is Presidents’ Daylight. It is considered a national holiday. It is a way to honor the previous presidents of America. Presidents’ Day has historically served as a day to celebrate both Washington and Lincoln.
Although it is a federal holiday , not every state observes this holiday. Some states recognize the presidents of both countries, while others are only allowed to recognize one president. Although Presidents’ day is now common this holiday allows us to remember all U.S. presidents and especially Lincoln.
It has had a complex history. Washington’s Birthday was the first name of the event. Today, it is Presidents Day.
Washington’s birthday, more commonly called Washington’s Day is a well-known non-official holiday. It was officially recognized as a as a federal holiday in the 1870s. Congress passed the Uniform Monday holiday Act.
Storms of Meteors
Each year it is the time when the Earth passes through its circle around the sun creating tiny meteors to explode into space. They are visible all over the sky. Certain showers are more stunning than others. Nighttime is the best moment to see them.
Perseids is one of most beautiful and impressive meteor showers of 2018. It is possible that Comet 109P/Swift Tuttle is responsible. Although it won’t be seen from the Northern Hemisphere due to the large number of fireballs that occur within the Southern Hemisphere, it is worth observing from there.
Four major meteor showers take place each year. One of the most well-known meteor showers is called the Quadrantid. It is famous for its small but extremely strong peak. Another well-known for its odd spikes is the Lyrid. The Geminid is also famous for its likable appearance.
Roman holiday celebrations in antiquity
The Lupercalia was a major celebration in the ancient city of Rome. A cleansing and fertility ceremony took place in the middle of February. Priests offered animal sacrifices at the altar to the Lapis Nuiger during the ceremony. The hearth was filled up with the blood of the animal. It was thought that the hearth would provide fertile soil and protect the fields of grain.
Ludi Ceriales was another celebration to honor Ceres (the goddess of harvest). Since the year 202 BC, Ludi Ceriales celebrations are documented.
Neptunalia was one of the more well-known Roman celebrations. These celebrations were originally held to honor Mars, the godof war.
Roman workweeks were eight days long. Each day consisted of two parts: morning and afternoon. A nundin was a collection of eight days, and the other 29 days comprised the rest of the year.
