February 14th
Valentine’s Day (February 14th) is a day to celebrate love and affection. It is observed every year. It dates to as early as the Middle Ages, when love was more prevalent than courtly and sacramental.
It was a day to celebrate romantic love during the 14th century. Valentine’s Day is a time to give Valentine’s Day gifts and flowers.
Commercial cards were made available from the beginning of the 19th century. The popularity of postcards printed in bulk was also growing. They were put up in shops in themed displays.
Gifting your special someone with a candy or chocolate present, along with a card or flower, is a traditional Valentine’s Day tradition. It is also possible to present them with jewelry.
February 2nd.
Groundhog Day, which is celebrated every February 2 and is an annual event. It is also a popular holiday in Canada however, Thanksgiving is an American holiday celebrated in the United States.
Superstition among Pennsylvanians Dutch people led to the festival. The American custom of making forecasts for weather was introduced to America by German immigrants. PunxsutawneyPhil is a Pennsylvania groundhog, makes meteorological predictions for all of the winter.
The practice was first introduced after scientists discovered mice that hibernate in winter. The goal was to forecast the weather for the six remaining weeks by observing how animals respond to it.
Groundhogs are part of Sciuridae which is a tiny family of mammals with hairy fur. They are winter animals and their main purpose is to go into hibernation. Groundhog Day mornings are a perfect time to see they are peering out of their burrows.
Christmas Day
The third Monday of February, President’s Daylight is recognized as an American holiday. It pays tribute to past American presidents. The Presidents’ Day holiday was typically a day of celebration to honor Lincoln and Washington.
It is a federal holiday that is not observed by all states even though it is one. Certain states honor both presidents, whereas others only recognize one. The Presidents’ Day holiday is widely recognized as an opportunity to recognize the achievements of all U.S. presidentials, particularly Lincoln.
Presidents Day has had a tangled past. The Washington’s Birthday was the first name of the celebration, which is now known as Presidents Day.
Washington’s birthday, often referred to by the title Washington’s Day was a well-known nonofficial holiday. It was recognized as a national holiday by Congress in the 1870s. Congress adopted the Uniform Monday holiday Act.
Meteor showers
Every year, the Earth’s orbit rotates around the sun. A stream of tiny meteors are released into space. They are visible in the sky and are everywhere. Some showers are more spectacular than others. The best time for viewing them is at night.
One of the biggest and most spectacular meteor showers that occurs throughout the year is the Perseids. This is due to the fact that Comet 109P/Swift Tuttle is responsible for. It is visible from the Northern Hemisphere, but as the Southern Hemisphere has some of the highest fireball rates It is also worthwhile to look up from there.
Every year there are four major meteor showers. The Quadrantid is the most prominent because of its powerful but short maximum. Another one is the Lyrid that is renowned for its unique surges. The Geminid is famous for its casual appearance.
Roman holidays that date back to antiquity
The Lupercalia was a well-known celebration in the ancient city of Rome. In February, a fertility cleansing ceremony was conducted. During the ceremony, priests offered sacrifices of animals to an altar close to the Lapis Niiger. The hearth was stuffed with the blood of the animal. The protection and fertility of the blood is believed to have been beneficial to the grain field.
Ludi Ceriales was another celebration to honor Ceres the goddess of harvest. Ludi Ceriales celebrations are documented as far back as 202 BC.
Other popular Roman celebrations include Neptunalia, Saturnalia and Vestalia. These celebrations were originally planned to celebrate Mars as the god of war.
Roman workweeks were 8 days long. Each day had two sections: morning and the afternoon. The nundin was eight days long. The 29 days remaining were the remainder.
