The Presidents’ Day holiday is widely recognized as an opportunity to recognize the achievements of all U.S. presidentials, particularly Lincoln.

Presidents Day has had a tangled past. The Washington’s Birthday was the first name of the celebration, which is now known as Presidents Day.

Washington’s birthday, often referred to by the title Washington’s Day was a well-known nonofficial holiday. It was recognized as a national holiday by Congress in the 1870s. Congress adopted the Uniform Monday holiday Act.

Meteor showers

Roman holidays that date back to antiquity

The Lupercalia was a well-known celebration in the ancient city of Rome. In February, a fertility cleansing ceremony was conducted. During the ceremony, priests offered sacrifices of animals to an altar close to the Lapis Niiger. The hearth was stuffed with the blood of the animal. The protection and fertility of the blood is believed to have been beneficial to the grain field.

Ludi Ceriales was another celebration to honor Ceres the goddess of harvest. Ludi Ceriales celebrations are documented as far back as 202 BC.

Other popular Roman celebrations include Neptunalia, Saturnalia and Vestalia. These celebrations were originally planned to celebrate Mars as the god of war.

Roman workweeks were 8 days long. Each day had two sections: morning and the afternoon. The nundin was eight days long. The 29 days remaining were the remainder.
