Roman holiday celebrations in antiquity
The Lupercalia was a well-known festival in ancient Rome. A ritual of cleansing and fertility was held in February. The priests offered animal sacrifices on an altar near the Lapis Niiger. The hearth was saturated with the animal’s blood. It was believed that it would benefit grains by ensuring their fertility and protecting the crops from damage.
Ludi Ceriales was another celebration to honor Ceres the goddess of harvest. Since 202 BC, Ludi Ceriales celebrations have been recorded.
Neptunalia was among the other well-known Roman celebrations. The celebrations were originally celebrated to honor Mars the god of war.
Roman workweeks lasted eight days. There were two sections to each day, the morning part and the afternoon. A nundin was eight days long. The remaining 29 days were called the rest.
