The idea for this celebration came from a superstition that originated among Pennsylvanians from the Dutch. The tradition of forecasting weather was introduced to America through German immigrants. Punxsutawney Philip, one of the Pennsylvania groundhog, offers meteorological forecasts throughout the rest of the winter.

After scientists found out that mice hibernated in winter, they set the foundation for this custom. The idea was to predict the following six weeks of the season by watching how the animals responded to the climate.
