Groundhog Day occurs annually on February 2. Even though it’s a big deal in Canada the Thanksgiving holiday is an American holiday.
The tradition was born out of beliefs that were derived from Pennsylvanians and Dutch people. German immigrants brought the tradition of weather forecasts into the United States. PunxsutawneyPhil is a Pennsylvania groundhog, makes meteorological predictions for all of the winter.
The custom got its start when scientists discovered mice that hibernate in the winter. The idea was to forecast the coming six weeks by studying how animals respond to the weather.
Groundhogs make up the Sciuridae family of small, hairy mammals. It hibernates during the winter. In the early morning hours of Groundhog Day, they are often seen peeking out of their burrows.
Christmas Day
Presidents Daylight (third Monday of February) is a national holiday. The holiday honors the previous American presidents. In the past, Presidents Day served as a day of celebration for both Lincoln and Washington.
It’s a federal holiday that is not observed by all states even though it is one. Certain states honor both presidents, while others are only allowed to recognize one president. But Presidents’ Day is widely regarded as a day to honor all U.S. presidentials, particularly Lincoln.
The origins of the Presidents’ Day holiday is complex. Washington’s Birthday was the initial name of the day’s celebration. Today, Presidents’ day is the official title.
Washington’s birthday, often referred to by the title Washington’s Day was a well-known not-official holiday. In the 1870s, however, it became a federally recognized holiday. Congress approved the Uniform Monday holiday Act.
Meteor storms
Every year, the Earth is orbiting in the solar system. This results in a flood of tiny meteors which are released into space. They can appear anywhere in the sky. Certain showers are more stunning than others. The best moment to view.
The Perseids meteor shower is among the most spectacular and biggest of the meteor showers. It is possible that the Comet 109P/Swift Tuttle is responsible. It will be visible from Northern Hemisphere. But, since the Southern Hemisphere is home to some of the most spectacular fireworks, it is only natural to also be able to observe the phenomenon from that region.
There are four major meteor showers every year. The Quadrantid is the first, and is known for its brief but intense maximum. The Lyrid also is renowned for its peculiar surges. The Geminid is also known for its attractive appearance.
Roman holidays in antiquity
The Lupercalia was an ancient Roman festival, which was loved by many. A cleansing and fertility ceremony was held in the middle of February. Priests offered sacrifices of animals at the altar for the Lapis Nuiger at the time of the ceremony. The hearth was emptied of the animal’s blood. The belief was that it would be beneficial to the fertility and protection of the grain fields.
Ludi Ceriales, another celebration, was celebrated in honor of Ceres, the harvest goddess. Ludi Ceriales celebrations were first recorded in 202 BC.
Other popular Roman celebrations are Neptunalia, Saturnalia and Vestalia. The celebrations were initially planned to celebrate Mars, the god war.
Roman workweeks lasted eight days. There were two portions to each day: morning and the afternoon. Nundin was a collection that comprised of eight days. The remaining 29 days comprised the remainder of the calendar year.
