Purchasing your special someone with a candy or chocolate present, along with an arrangement or card is a classic Valentine’s Day tradition. It is also possible to give them jewelry.
February 2nd.
Groundhog Day, which is observed on February 2 every year, is an annual event. It is also celebrated in Canada but it is American Thanksgiving.
The celebration originated from a superstition that originated among Pennsylvanians who were Dutch. But Americans inherited the custom of making weather predictions from German immigrants. Punxsutawney Philip is a Pennsylvania groundhog, provides meteorological forecasts throughout the rest of the winter.
The custom got its start when scientists discovered an animal that was hibernating in the winter. The initial plan was to predict the duration of each season by studying how animals responded to weather.
Groundhogs are part of the Sciuridae which is a tiny family of mammals with hairy fur. It is hibernates through winter. Groundhog Day is a common time when they can be seen peering out from their burrows.
Christmas Day
Presidents Daylight that falls on the third Monday in February, is considered to be a national holiday. It pays tribute past American presidents. Presidents’ Day has historically been a day to honor both Washington and Lincoln.
While it’s an official holiday of the United States but not every state observes the holiday in all states. While some states recognize both the presidents’ birthdays on the same day however, some states only recognize only one. However, Presidents’ Day is widely recognized as an opportunity to recognize all U.S. presidentials, particularly Lincoln.
There is a complicated history of Presidents Day. Washington’s Birthday is the original title of the celebration.
Washington’s birthday also known by the name Washington’s Day was a well-known non-official holiday. In the 1870s however it became a federally recognized holiday. In the end, Congress adopted the Uniform Monday Holiday Act.
Meteor showers
Each year it is the time when the Earth is in circle around the sun causing a torrent of small meteors to be released into space. They can be observed everywhere in the sky. Some showers are more impressive then others. The best time to watch.
Perseids are one of the most spectacular and stunning meteor showers of the entire year. This is due to Comet 109P/Swift Tuttle. It is visible from the Northern Hemisphere. But, since the Southern Hemisphere is home to some of the most stunning fireballs, it makes sense to be able to observe the phenomenon from that region.
Four significant meteor showers occur every year. One of the most well-known meteor showers is called the Quadrantid. It is known for its brief but extremely powerful peak. Another famous for its strange spikes is the Lyrid. The Geminid is also renowned for its approachable appearance.
Roman holidays from antiquity
The Lupercalia was a major holiday in ancient Rome. A fertility and cleansing ceremony was held in February. Priests offered animal sacrifices at the altar for the Lapis Nuiger at the time of the ceremony. The hearth was cleansed with the blood of the animal. The grain fields were thought to benefit from its protection and fertility.
Ludi Ceriales was another celebration to honor Ceres (the harvest goddess). Ludi Ceriales celebrations are documented as far back as the year 202 BC.
Other well-known Roman celebrations include Neptunalia, Saturnalia and Vestalia. These celebrations were originally meant to pay tribute to Mars the god of war.
The Roman week was eight days long. Each day had two parts: morning or afternoon. A nundin was an eight-day collection, with the rest of the year made up of 29 days.
