Roman holidays that date back to antiquity
The Lupercalia is among the most well-known holidays of the ancient city of Rome. In February, a fertility cleansing ceremony was held. During this rite, priests offered animal sacrifices on an altar beside the Lapis Naiger. The hearth was cleansed with the blood of the animal. It was thought that the hearth could provide fertile soil and protect the grain fields.
Ludi Ceriales was another celebration in honor of Ceres the goddess of harvest. Ludi Ceriales celebrations are documented as far back as 202 BC.
Neptunalia and Saturnalia were some other well-known Roman festivals. These celebrations were originally held to honor Mars the god of war.
Roman working weeks lasted for eight days. Every day consisted of two parts: the morning, and the afternoon. The nundin was a collection of eight days. the other 29 days comprised the remainder of the year.
